SPORT UTILITY UTV

This is a relatively new segment in the UTV world. The Can-Am Commander started it all back in 2010 with a lively engine and a very comfortable cab. After a few years, competitors came on board with powerful machines that can haul, carry and still have a large fun factor in total comfort when the work is done. These are hybrids of the work and play breed.

This year’s pick is:

YAMAHA WOLVERINE X2

YAMAHA ON THE WEB

YAMAHA WOLVERINE X2

YAMAHA WOLVERINE X2

Back in 2015, I was one of the first to drive the Wolverine when it ARRIVED in Canada. It was a very nice ride, well built with great handling. One thing that kept if off the recreational UTV driver’s radar was the 708 cc single cylinder. It was way too underpowered for any spirited driving and spedd was limited electronically to 80 kph.

Why we picked it:

The Wolverine is back with the same stout package it had with two major modifications. First, the cargo bed can now be dumped.  The most significant upgrade is the engine.

Now equipped with an 847 cc parallel twin cylinder, the Wolverine suddenly makes a lot more sense. Accelerations are much more powerful and the driver has enough power on tap to slide the rear end for a little fun. The hated limiter is still set at 80 kph but under that it’s all fun.

Comfy seats, simple but functional interior layout, built like a tank and as reliable as an anvil.

For all its qualities and one minor setback the Wolverine X2 gets our vote for 2019
